Rural Italian Town Faces Healthcare Crisis as Doctor Retirement leaves Residents Without Care
Piteglio, Italy – Residents of several hamlets in the former municipality of Piteglio are facing a healthcare crisis after the recent retirement of their local general practitioner, Dr. Andreotti. Despite repeated attempts by the local health authority (ASL) to recruit a replacement, the area – including the villages of Lanciole, Crespole, and Calamecca – remains without consistent medical access.
The situation has sparked concern and frustration amongst residents, with many now struggling to find a doctor. Elisa Bruni, a local resident, voiced her distress over the impact on her 84-year-old grandmother. “Following dr. Andreotti’s retirement, the municipality has yet to assign a new doctor,” she explained. “My grandmother is now without a GP, and the only suggestion offered is a doctor in Abetone, requiring a notable and challenging journey for each appointment.”
the ASL has encouraged patients previously served by Dr. Andreotti to seek a new physician through the centralized booking system (CUP). However, many, like Bruni’s grandmother, have found this impractical due to doctors being at capacity and unwilling to take on new patients. The alternative – choosing a doctor from a neighboring town like Pescia or Pistoia – requires the approval of the physician, adding another layer of difficulty.
Local authorities, led by Mayor Luca Marmo, have called for collaboration and understanding, but residents argue that a doctor is the fundamental requirement. “The situation affects dozens of people who are currently without access to essential local medical assistance,” Bruni stated. “It’s vital to raise awareness of this problem and the hardship it’s causing our community.”
The ongoing lack of a local doctor highlights the challenges faced by rural communities in Italy in maintaining adequate healthcare services.The ASL continues its search for a replacement, but for now, residents remain vulnerable and reliant on potentially inaccessible care options.
