Trinity Rodman Contract talks Reach NWSL Commissioner Amid Overseas Interest
WASHINGTON D.C. – Negotiations surrounding Washington Spirit forward trinity rodman’s contract have escalated to the level of NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman, as multiple English Women’s super League teams have expressed strong interest in acquiring the U.S. women’s national team star. The development comes as the Spirit prepare for the NWSL Championship final against Gotham FC on November 10th.
Rodman, 26, was selected No. 2 overall in the 2021 NWSL Draft and immediatly made an impact, earning Rookie of the Year honors with seven goals and seven assists. She played a key role in the Spirit’s 2021 NWSL Championship victory, providing an assist to Kelley O’Hara against the Chicago Red Stars to secure the title.
The rising star has continued to excel, recording 11 goals and nine assists in 47 appearances for the USWNT and becoming a prominent figure in the team’s attack, forming a forward line dubbed ”triple espresso” alongside Sophia Wilson and Mallory Swanson. She helped lead the U.S. to gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
This season has been hampered by injuries, including a persistent back problem limiting her to 15 appearances and nine starts in 26 regular-season games. She later sprained her MCL during a Concacaf Champions Cup match in October, sidelining her for the final two regular season games and limiting her role in the quarterfinals. Despite the setbacks, rodman contributed to the Spirit securing the No. 2 spot in the NWSL standings.
the potential for Rodman to move overseas highlights a growing trend in the NWSL, with players like defender Naomi Girma and forward Alyssa Thompson recently transferring to Chelsea. The ability of European clubs to offer higher salaries is a significant factor in this evolving global market.
spirit owner Michele Kang has previously stated her support for players gaining experiance in different leagues, saying in March, “The European players should actually go at some point to experience the American football or different football. The same thing with the American football players as well…Experiencing different styles, different leagues, it’s actually a good thing.”
Rodman has also garnered significant marketing attention, recently appearing as the only U.S. player in an Adidas campaign promoting the 2026 men’s World cup.
Following the Spirit’s 2-0 semifinal win over the Portland Thorns on November 4th, Rodman indicated her priority remains winning a championship. “Once we get this championship,” she said, “then I can start making decisions and figuring out what next year looks like for me.”
