World Diabetes Day 2023 Focuses on Workplace Inclusion, Combating Stigma
Lisbon, Portugal - November 14, 2023 – World Diabetes Day, observed annually on November 14th, is spotlighting the challenges faced by the millions living with diabetes in professional settings, urging employers adn colleagues to foster inclusive environments. The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) estimates that a significant portion of the global diabetic population experiences stigma, discrimination, and exclusion at work, negatively impacting well-being and career advancement.
Diabetes affects over 537 million adults worldwide, according to the IDF, and many grapple with daily obstacles managing the condition while navigating workplace dynamics. These hurdles range from a lack of understanding among coworkers to overt discriminatory practices, hindering professional growth and overall quality of life. This year’s campaign aims to normalize conversations about diabetes,raise awareness,and promote supportive policies within organizations.
The IDF emphasizes that workplace inclusion is crucial for individuals with diabetes. “Millions of people with diabetes face daily challenges managing the disease in the workplace, including stigma, discrimination and exclusion. This has a negative impact on your well-being, whilst limiting career progression,” the institution stated.
