Rosa Rosal, Beloved Philippine Actress and Humanitarian, Dies at 97
MANILA - Rosa Rosal, a celebrated actress who transitioned into a lifetime of dedicated humanitarian work with the Philippine Red Cross, passed away today at the age of 97.Known for her prolific career in Philippine cinema and her unwavering commitment to public service, Rosal leaves behind a legacy of compassion and volunteerism.
Born Florence Lansang Danon, Rosal captivated audiences for decades with roles in iconic films such as Himala ng Birhen (1947), Anak Dalita (1956), Badjao (1957), Biyaya ng Lupa (1959), and Esperanza: The Movie (1999). She received a Best Actress award from the Filipino Academy for Movie arts and Sciences (FAMAS) in 1955 for “Sonny Boy” and the FAMAS International Prestige Award for Anak Dalita in 1956, which also won best picture at the Asian film Festival in Hong Kong, earning a Presidential Citation from President Ramon Magsaysay. A pioneer, Rosal successfully crossed over to television in the 1960s, appearing in series like Balintataw and Iyan Ang Misis Ko. She later hosted Kapwa ko, Mahal Ko on GMA 7 in 1975 and Damayan on Channel 4 in 1976.
However, Rosal’s impact extended far beyond the screen. She was a devoted volunteer with the Philippine Red Cross as the 1950s, becoming a Board of Governor in 1965 and remaining a member to the present. She tirelessly advocated for voluntary blood donation, helping to raise national awareness and inspiring countless Filipinos to give blood.
“Gov.Rosal leaves behind a legacy of genuine service, dignity, and love for humanity, a legacy that will continue to guide the Philippine Red cross and inspire generations of volunteers,” the Philippine Red Cross stated.
richard Gordon, PRC’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, described Rosal as “a devoted and iconic volunteer whose life was defined by compassion and unwavering service.” He added, “Thru her tireless advocacy, she helped create a national consciousness for voluntary blood donation, inspiring countless filipinos to give the gift of life.”
Rosal’s dedication to humanitarian work was recognized with the Ramon Magsaysay Award and the Order of the Golden Heart (grand Cross) in 2006, presented by then President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. She was also honored with the 2012 U.P. Gawad Plaridel for her contributions to the broadcasting industry.
