Colonial heights Animal Control Employee Faces Animal Cruelty Charges

SUSSEX COUNTY, VA – A Colonial Heights animal control employee has been charged with multiple counts ⁣of animal cruelty following an inquiry in Sussex⁢ County, ⁢Virginia. Susannah Marie Grimes, 33, of Disputanta,⁣ was arrested Tuesday and faces six felony counts of animal cruelty,⁣ according to Virginia State⁢ Police.

The charges stem ⁢from‍ a⁤ welfare check conducted on February 29th at a residence in the 18000 block ⁣of Courthouse Road, where authorities discovered numerous animals living in deplorable conditions. Investigators found animals suffering ⁢from malnutrition, untreated medical conditions, and a lack of adequate shelter. This ⁣case highlights ongoing concerns about animal welfare and the responsibility of those entrusted with their care, and raises questions about oversight of animal control personnel. Grimes’s next court appearance is ⁤scheduled ⁢for May 21st.

Virginia ‍State Police initiated the investigation ‍after receiving a request from Sussex County Animal Control. Upon arrival, authorities found a total of‌ 28 animals – ⁣including dogs, cats, rabbits, and chickens – in distress. Several animals required immediate veterinary attention and were transported to local animal shelters ‍and veterinary hospitals for‍ treatment.

“The conditions these animals were living in⁤ were​ unacceptable,” stated a virginia State Police spokesperson.​ “We take animal cruelty very seriously, and anyone ‍found to be neglecting or abusing animals will be held accountable.”

Grimes was employed by Colonial Heights Animal Control at the time of the alleged offenses. City officials confirmed she is‍ currently on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. Colonial Heights City Manager Sue M. ​Parham stated the city is “fully cooperating⁣ with the ⁢Virginia State⁢ Police investigation” and is committed to ensuring the humane ⁣treatment of animals.
