George Conway, a well-known lawyer and vocal critic of former President Donald Trump, is weighing a run for Congress in New York City, CNN has learned. The potential candidacy adds another high-profile name to a developing race for the seat currently held by Rep. jerry Nadler.
The open seat in New York’s 12th Congressional District, encompassing much of manhattan, is expected to be fiercely contested following Nadler’s recent declaration he will not seek reelection. Conway, running as an autonomous, could enter the Democratic primary, joining candidates like Jack Schlossberg, grandson of former President John F. Kennedy, who launched his campaign this week. This race is drawing significant attention as it pits figures with distinct political backgrounds against each other in a key district.
Conway was once a prominent figure in conservative legal circles and notably served as counsel to several Republican organizations. He gained wider recognition through his public and increasingly critical stance against Trump, a departure that followed his divorce from Kellyanne Conway, who managed Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and later served as a senior advisor in the White House.
Since publicly breaking with Trump, Conway has actively supported Democratic efforts, contributing to former President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign and endorsing and voting for Vice President Kamala harris. He has become a frequent commentator on political issues, frequently enough offering sharp critiques of the former president and his allies.
Conway has not yet publicly announced his intentions regarding a congressional run and declined to comment when reached by CNN for this story. The field of candidates is expected to grow as the election cycle progresses.
