James Van Der Beek is auctioning off iconic memorabilia from his career, including items from “Dawson’s Creek” and ”Varsity Blues,” to help cover the costs of his colorectal cancer treatment. The 48-year-old actor revealed his stage 3 diagnosis last year and is now partnering with Propstore to sell cherished pieces from his personal collection.
the auction, running december 5-7, offers fans a chance to own a piece of television and film history while directly supporting Van Der Beek‘s medical expenses. Colorectal cancer is the third moast common cancer diagnosed in the U.S., with treatment costs exceeding $24.3 billion in 2020 alone - representing 11.3% of all cancer treatment spending in the country.
Among the items up for sale is the prom necklace Dawson Leery gifted to Joey Potter in “Dawson’s Creek,” and also the cleats and West Canaan Coyotes hat worn by Van Der beek in the 1999 film “Varsity Blues.” “I’ve been storing these treasures for years, waiting for the right time to do something with them, and with all of the recent unexpected twists and turns life has presented recently, it’s clear that the time is now,” Van Der Beek told People. “While I have some nostalgia tugging at me as I part with these items, it feels good to be able to offer them through Propstore’s auction to share with those who have supported my work over the years.”
Van Der Beek publicly shared his diagnosis with People last year, stating, “There’s reason for optimism, and I’m feeling good,” and emphasizing the support of his family. According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 1 in 23 men and 1 in 25 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer in their lifetime. The auction proceeds will go directly towards Van Der Beek’s ongoing medical care.
