Snapchat Revives 2D Bitmojis – But With a Premium Catch
Snapchat has announced the return of its popular 2D Bitmoji avatars, responding to years of user requests and online nostalgia. Though, the revival comes with a key condition: access to the classic comic-book style avatars will be exclusive to subscribers of Snapchat+, the platform’s premium service.
The decision to bring back the 2D style follows a significant overhaul in 2023,when Snapchat transitioned Bitmojis to a three-dimensional format. The update aimed to provide users with more realistic and customizable avatars, introducing features like diverse body types, detailed hairstyles, makeup options, freckles, and more nuanced skin and hair textures. Despite these efforts, the change proved unpopular, with many users finding the 3D Bitmojis “less expressive” and less visually appealing than their 2D predecessors.
The backlash was swift and vocal. Thousands of negative comments flooded social media, and users launched an online petition urging Snapchat to restore the original style. After two years of user feedback, Snapchat has responded with “Comic Bitmojis,” a new style designed to replicate the 2D look while leveraging the platform’s existing 3D infrastructure.
According to snapchat, the new feature will be rolled out in the coming days and will function as a “graphic filter” for Snapchat+ subscribers, applying the clean lines and luminous colors of the classic Bitmoji to their avatars. The company states this will allow users to enjoy the nostalgia of the original style alongside the expressions and dynamic movements of the newer 3D avatars, offering “the best of both worlds.”
While the return of 2D Bitmojis has been met with enthusiasm from Snapchat+ users, it also raises questions about the platform’s monetization strategy. Snapchat has increasingly focused on generating revenue through premium content and features. Restricting access to the beloved 2D style to paying subscribers is a clear example of this approach.
Despite the potential for debate, Snapchat’s move demonstrates a willingness to listen to its community and even revisit past decisions. The return of 2D Bitmoji, the company suggests, is a testament to the enduring appeal of certain visual experiences and the power of user affection in driving evolution within the tech industry.
