Finding Clarity: Sonia Cortés on sobriety, Love, and a Renewed Life
Sonia Cortés describes a pivotal moment in her life as “eye-opening,” occurring on December 29th when an inner prompting led her to a church. It was there, she says, that she realized the need for notable change. ”I asked God for control and clarity,” Cortés recalls, a request that directly led to her decision to embrace sobriety.
She speaks candidly about her past relationship with alcohol, acknowledging, “I drank a lot.My notes were public. I was obvious with my excesses.” However, Cortés approaches sobriety not as a rigid restriction, but as a daily commitment. “This is for 24 hours. Today I decided that I am not going to consume. Tomorrow we will see,” she explains, emphasizing the ongoing nature of the process.
Now six months sober, Cortés attributes this journey to a newfound sense of mental clarity, emotional stability, and a profound peace she describes as “deeper than any other time in my life.”
Remarkably, the day she committed to sobriety also marked the begining of a new romantic relationship. Cortés expresses disbelief and gratitude for the timing, feeling as though her life rapidly aligned. Her partner, she says, was drawn to her newfound clarity and genuine enjoyment of life without substances. “I was surprised by his clarity, his simple joy, his way of living without filters or substances,” her partner shared. The relationship is described as a safe haven, a space built on authentic connection.
“Making love sober, talking, laughing, watching a movie… everything feels more real,” Cortés reflects. “There are no notes,there are no confusions. There is presence.”
Alongside her personal conversion, Cortés remains dedicated to her career, currently thriving at Mega Circus alongside Father Orlando Lugo and Funky Joe. She notes the positive reception to the priest’s involvement, stating, “Starting the program with a blessing is something different. And the people have received it with affection.”
Cortés acknowledges the responsibility that comes with longevity in the entertainment industry, remembering her pioneering role as one of the first women to host a late-night radio show featuring humor and open conversation. She continues to prioritize authenticity as a cornerstone of her work.
Beyond radio, Cortés has expanded her ventures into business, launching perfumes, beauty products, drinks, and creative collaborations. She emphasizes that each project must align with her core values. “If I have to force something, it doesn’t go with me.The cake is big. There is room for everyone,” she says, embodying a generous and inclusive view of success.
Ultimately, Cortés attributes her current state to self-forgiveness. “I had to forgive myself first,” she states with maturity. “It’s never too late to make wise decisions. This is my rebirth.”
Today, she describes herself as in love, at peace, and grateful, choosing to focus on the present moment. “Happiness is not perfect,” she reflects. “But now I feel lapses of joy that surprise me. And that’s enough.”
