The New York Giants announced Monday the firing of head coach Brian Daboll following a 2-8 start to the season. The move marks a meaningful shift for the team, coming after a recent 24-20 loss to the Chicago Bears where the Giants relinquished a late lead.
Offensive coordinator Mike Kafka has been named interim head coach.
Daboll, who previously served as the offensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills, was in his first NFL head coaching role. He guided the giants to a playoff appearance and earned NFL Coach of the Year honors in 2022, but the team struggled in 2023, losing four consecutive games after their upset victory over the Philadelphia Eagles last month.
His overall record with the giants was 20-40-1, with an 11-33 record following the 2022 season.Daboll’s.336 winning percentage ranks 154th out of 166 NFL coaches with at least 50 games coached since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger.
The Giants’ decision to remove a head coach mid-season is rare, occurring only three times since 1970. The last such dismissal was in 2017, when both Ben McAdoo and general manager Jerry Reese were fired with a 2-10 record.
Rumors regarding Daboll’s future with the team had circulated for several weeks prior to Monday’s declaration.
