Lithuania-Israel Euro Qualifier to be Played Behind Closed Doors Amidst security Concerns
Amsterdam, Netherlands – The upcoming Euro 2024 qualifying match between lithuania and Israel, scheduled for monday in Amsterdam, will be played without spectators, following a decision made due to concerns over potential provocations.the Lithuanian Football Federation (LFF) confirmed the measure, citing a heightened geopolitical climate and credible indications of possible disruptions.
The decision impacts fans of both nations eager to support their teams in a crucial qualifying match. This marks an unusual circumstance for international competition, prioritizing security over the customary atmosphere of a live sporting event. The match will proceed as planned, but in a closed stadium habitat.
lithuania national team head coach Edgaras Jankauskas expressed understanding and support for the LFF’s decision. “these are the circumstances – we all know what is happening in the world and what is the geopolitical situation. We fully support the federation’s decision, as we certainly know that it was made after considering everything very well. It is indeed critically important to prevent possible provocations, especially if there are notable indications that such things may happen. This is the most correct decision. Of course, playing in front of empty stands is a different feeling, but all those who will play have played without spectators,” Jankauskas stated.
Historically, Lithuania and israel have met five times in international play, all in kind matches. Israel holds a 4-1 advantage in those encounters, with one match ending in a draw. Israel has yet to qualify for the main stages of the European Championship and last appeared in a World Cup tournament in 1970, exiting after the group stage.
The Israeli national team boasts several players currently competing at high levels in European football, including goalkeeper Daniel peretz of Bayern Munich and forward Manor Solomon of Tottenham Hotspur, who previously played for Leeds United.
