Tampa, Florida – Four people were killed and eleven injured after a vehicle fleeing police crashed into a crowded bar in Tampa’s historic Ybor City early Saturday morning. The incident occurred at approximately 12:40 a.m. outside Bradley’s on 7th, a popular nightlife spot.
Police were alerted to the vehicle after it was observed racing in another neighborhood. The Florida Highway Patrol attempted to stop the car with a PIT maneuver, but the attempt was unsuccessful. Officers disengaged the pursuit as the vehicle sped towards Ybor City, known for its vibrant nightlife and tourist activity.
The driver later lost control of the vehicle and struck more than a dozen people gathered outside the bar. Authorities have stated the crash was not a targeted attack. Three people died at the scene, and a fourth died after being transported to a hospital. As of Saturday afternoon, two people remained hospitalized in critical condition, seven were listed as stable, and two had been treated and discharged. Two individuals with minor injuries declined medical treatment.
The suspect has been identified as Silas Sampson, 22. He has been charged with four counts of vehicular homicide and four counts of aggravated fleeing or eluding with serious bodily injury or death – all first-degree felonies, according to court documents.
“What happened this morning was a senseless tragedy,” said Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw. “Our hearts are with the loved ones of the victims and all those who were impacted. Reckless driving put innocent lives in danger.”
Tampa Mayor Jane Castor added, “Our entire city feels this loss.”
Bradley Nelson, owner of Bradley’s on 7th, stated the vehicle struck three people on the pavement before crashing into the bar’s patio area. “This event has been very traumatic for my entire staff, and myself,” Nelson said. “Our thoughts and prayers go to the families of those who were killed, and to all the injured.”
