Grace Ives Announces New Music, details Transformative LA Writing process
Singer-songwriter Grace Ives is releasing new music, born from a period of profound personal change adn creative exploration in Los Angeles. The artist, previously known for her bedroom-pop aesthetic, describes the forthcoming songs as her most “real” work to date, a shift fueled by a deliberate move to LA and a commitment to openness and connection.
Ives detailed a conscious departure from the isolation that characterized her earlier years in New York City. “I felt safer out in the world than I did holed up in my nest,” she explained in a recent interview with Pitchfork.”like trying to be a good person while surrounded by new places and people was a more secure plan than trying to change all alone at home.” This newfound sense of security manifested in embracing new experiences – learning to drive, taking road trips with friends and alone, and even staying in random motels – all of which contrasted sharply with a past defined by “falling, flailing and sneaking around.”
The change in habitat directly impacted her songwriting process. Ives wrote in libraries across Los Angeles, immersing herself in the city while crafting the new material. She also expanded her musical skillset, playing more instruments on this record than in much of her previous work. ”I’ve let my heart and my hands work freely,” she said.
The resulting music, Ives notes, is “spacious, clear and confident,” reflecting a journey towards self-acceptance and a broader outlook. “The sky expanded around me and reminded me that I was not, in fact, the center of the universe. Just a small part of it. Thank god,” she shared. Ives’ new songs grapple with past “shrapnel” from chaotic years, but ultimately convey a sense of freedom, joy, and a willingness to engage with life fully.”I’m not lonely, I’m alive and I’m laughing, and I feel my heart beat really fast, and it doesn’t scare me like it used to,” she stated.
Details regarding the release date and specific song titles have not yet been announced.
