russia Intensifies Attacks on ukrainian Energy Infrastructure
Kyiv, Ukraine – November 8, 2025 – Russia has escalated its military campaign with a renewed focus on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, launching a series of long-range strikes primarily utilizing drone technology. The attacks aim to cripple Ukraine’s ability to fund its war effort by disrupting oil exports and diminishing revenue streams, according to defense analysts.
The intensification of these strikes occurs as diplomatic initiatives led by former U.S. President Donald Trump to negotiate an end to the conflict remain stalled. Simultaneously, Russian forces are achieving incremental gains on the eastern front, particularly in the Donetsk region, raising concerns about a potential shift in momentum. The targeting of energy facilities represents a strategic attempt to weaken Ukraine’s resilience as winter approaches and energy demands increase.
Recent months have seen a concentrated effort by Ukrainian forces to counter Russian advances with their own long-range strikes. Though, the current Russian offensive is centered on the strategically vital city of Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region, a key logistical hub for Ukrainian troops. Should Pokrovsk fall, it would mark Russia’s most significant territorial gain since capturing Vougledar in October 2024 and Avdiïvka in february 2024.
According to an analysis by AFP, utilizing data from the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) and the Critical Threats Project (CTP), Russia currently controls approximately 20% of Ukrainian territory. This figure includes the 7% – encompassing Crimea and portions of Donbas - that was under Russian control prior to the February 2022 invasion. The ongoing attacks on energy infrastructure signal a potential escalation in Russia’s strategy, aiming to exert further pressure on Ukraine and potentially influence the trajectory of the conflict.
