‘Gremlins‘ Reboot Confirmed: Spielberg and Columbus Return for Third Film
LOS ANGELES – A new “Gremlins” film is officially in growth, with Steven Spielberg and Chris Columbus set to reunite for the project, according to recent reports. the proclamation marks a significant step forward for the long-awaited sequel to the 1984 cult classic and its 1990 follow-up.
The original “Gremlins,” directed by Joe Dante and written by Chris Columbus, centered on the mischievous creatures and the three crucial rules for their care: don’t get them wet, don’t feed them after midnight, and don’t expose them to luminous light. The films tracked the chaos that ensued when these rules were broken, leading to unstoppable spawning and unruly mutations.
The forthcoming film’s development was hinted at this summer by Zach Galligan, who starred in the first two “Gremlins” movies, during an appearance at Comic-Con Manchester. Galligan revealed, according to a TikTok video, “they’ve come up with a script” and that Warner Bros. was “incredibly interested in doing it, apparently it’s waiting upon Mr. Spielberg to read it and approve it.”
While details surrounding the plot remain scarce, the project’s confirmation signals a renewed interest in rebooting beloved titles at Warner Bros. Finding, joining projects like new installments in “The Lord of the Rings,” ”Harry Potter,” and “Practical Magic.”
The “Gremlins” franchise has seen a recent expansion with the 2023 animated prequel TV series,”Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai,” which explored the origins of the Mogwai creatures and their connection to Chinese mythology. the series, from showrunner and executive producer Tze Chun, featured the voice work of Howie Mandel as Gizmo and Frank Welker as the Gremlins, alongside the return of Keye Luke as Mr. Wing.
Executive producer Brendan Hay explained in 2023 that the series aimed to “own the somewhat throwaway origin that the Mogwai have in the films,” and to “actually try[ing] to find a place for Mogwai that fits into Chinese mythology.”
