Supermoon to Illuminate Skies Tonight: here’s How to See It

Skywatchers are in for a treat tonight! This Wednesday marks the second and final “supermoon” of the year, following a stunning showing on October 7th. Look to the night sky to witness a full moon appearing larger and brighter than usual.
While the term “supermoon” isn’t an official scientific designation, according to the national Observatory,it’s become a popular way to describe a full moon occurring near its closest point to Earth – a point known as perigee. Specifically, it refers to a full moon within 90% of perigee.
Tonight, the moon will be approximately 356,980 kilometers (221,803 miles) from our planet.
“you don’t need any equipment, just look at the sky,” advises Josina Oliveira do Nascimento, manager of the Communication and Popularization Division of Science at the National Observatory. For the best viewing experience, she recommends finding a location away from artificial light sources. Of course, clear skies are essential!
Why Does it Appear Bigger?
The moon may seem even larger when it’s near the horizon, an optical illusion that adds to the spectacle.
when to Look:
The optimal time to observe the supermoon is within one hour after sunset or one hour before sunrise, when the moon is low on the horizon and unobstructed by atmospheric phenomena. Sunset times vary by location:
* São Paulo, Brazil: 6:23 PM (Brasília time)
* Recife, Brazil: 5:15 PM (Brasília time)
* Porto Alegre, Brazil: 6:49 PM (Brasília time)
Mark your calendars! The next supermoon isn’t expected until December 4th, when the moon will be 357,219 kilometers (221,959 miles) from Earth. Don’t miss tonight’s celestial display – a simple look upwards is all it takes!
