German Table Tennis Player Sabine Winter makes History, Reaches WTT Champions Final
Montpellier, France – November 3rd, 2025, 12:05 p.m. – Sabine Winter has become the first European woman to reach the final of a $500,000-level table tennis tournament, a landmark achievement at the WTT Champions event in Montpellier. Though narrowly defeated by China’s Wang Yidi 4-3, the 33-year-old german player’s performance marks a turning point for European table tennis and propels her to new heights in the sport.
Winter fought back tears following the match,acknowledging her disappointment but emphasizing her pride in the run. “Of course the defeat hurts at first, as I had my chance,” Winter admitted, “but I had played a fantastic tournament – even in the final.” The closely contested final saw Winter relinquish a set lead twice and miss a match point at 3-2,ultimately falling short of a historic victory.
This breakthrough comes after Winter’s recent switch to an anti-spin system less than a year ago. Her success in Montpellier included impressive wins against Romania’s Bernadette Szöcs (3-0) and South Korea’s Shin Yubin (4-1 in the semi-final), and also a dramatic quarterfinal victory over Hong Kong Chinese’s Doo Hoi Kem, coming back from 0-3 down to win 4-3 and save a match point.
the results have substantially boosted Winter’s world ranking.She will now be ranked as Europe’s number one player, at 17th in the world, and the top German player, surpassing Ying Han. Winter earned 700 world ranking points and $20,000 in prize money for reaching the final.
Winter now looks ahead to the Champions tournament in Frankfurt am Main, beginning Tuesday, hoping to “continue this wonderful journey in Frankfurt in front of the home crowd with a great atmosphere.” Her first-round match is scheduled for Thursday against Portugal’s Fu Yu.
