Sinner Defeats Auger-Aliassime to Win Paris Masters, Reclaims World No. 1 Ranking
PARIS, FRANCE – november 5, 2023 – Jannik sinner defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime in the final of the Paris Masters to secure his first title at the event and regain the world No. 1 ranking, surpassing Carlos Alcaraz. Sinner won in straight sets, taking the match after a closely contested tie-break in the second set.
Auger-aliassime, the 2023 Wimbledon champion, displayed strong form initially, but Sinner remained consistent throughout. The second set saw Auger-Aliassime save several break points and even take a 4-3 lead, ultimately forcing a tie-break. A mini-break proved decisive for Sinner, closing out the match.
“It’s huge, honestly. It was such an intense final here and we both knew what was on the line,” Sinner said after the victory. “For him, it’s a very tough and difficult spot, but from my side, I’m extremely happy.” He added, “He was serving extremely well. You have to use your small chances well.”
The win moves Sinner 250 points above alcaraz in the rankings. Alcaraz was eliminated from the tournament in the second round by Cameron Norrie.
Auger-Aliassime will climb to eighth in the world rankings following the Paris Masters. He is aiming to qualify for the ATP Finals,which begin on November 9,reserved for the top eight players in the world. he currently holds a narrow lead over world No. 9 Lorenzo Musetti. Auger-Aliassime has won titles in Adelaide, Montpellier, and Brussels this year.
Sinner has extended his winning streak on indoor hard courts to 26 matches,dating back to the 2023 Davis Cup Finals,and is confirmed to compete in the ATP Finals in Turin.
Alcaraz, also heading to Turin, expressed disappointment with his performance in Paris but remains optimistic. “I came here realy well. I came here with a lot of energy…This is the best year for me in terms of playing at the end of the year,” he stated.”Other years I felt exhausted…But this year I feel good. I skipped Shanghai…I don’t know what happened here. It is a tournament that is really difficult for me to play well, but I will figure it out, and I will end up playing great tennis here, for sure.”
