HERMOSILLO, Mexico – A devastating fire and explosion at a convenience store in Hermosillo, Sonora state, Mexico, resulted in at least 23 fatalities, including children, and left 12 individuals injured, authorities reported Saturday. The blaze erupted at the Waldo’s store in downtown hermosillo, prompting a swift response from state and local emergency services. Six people remained hospitalized Sunday morning, according to Sonora’s prosecutor’s office, with preliminary investigations indicating that inhalation of toxic gases was the primary cause of death. Images circulating online depict a large-scale fire consuming the store, with one video showing a severely burned individual collapsing near the entrance.
Investigators currently believe the fire originated in a transformer, but the precise cause remains under investigation, according to Sonora Attorney General Gustavo Salas Chávez.
Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum offered her “deepest condolences” to the families and loved ones of the victims. She stated she had contacted Governor Durazo to offer federal support and directed Interior Secretary Rosa Icela Rodríguez to dispatch a team to assist families and the injured.
