Large Demonstrations Mark One Year Since Serbian Train station Tragedy
BELGRADE, serbia – Tens of thousands of people gathered in Belgrade on Saturday to mark the first anniversary of a train station shooting that left eight people dead and sparked widespread protests against the government of president Aleksandar Vučić. The demonstrations, largely peaceful, represent a sustained challenge to Vučić’s authority following accusations of negligence and corruption linked to the disaster.
The tragedy, which occurred on May 3, 2024, ignited public anger over alleged links between the shooter and members of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party, as well as concerns about media freedom and political violence. The protests have become a focal point for broader discontent with Vučić’s increasingly authoritarian rule and stalled progress toward European Union membership.Serbia declared Saturday a national day of mourning.
Vučić initially dismissed demonstrators as western-backed “terrorists,” but made a rare public apology on Friday for his harsh rhetoric, calling for dialog and acknowledging the “hatred boiling in our society.” “I have said some things that I am now sorry for saying,” Vučić said in a televised address. “All that hatred…cannot bring any good. It can only lead to further destruction.”
The government has faced increasing scrutiny following the incident. In September, 13 individuals, including former construction minister Goran Vesić, were charged in a criminal case related to the disaster. An EU-backed investigation is also underway to examine the potential misuse of EU funds in the project.
The EU’s commissioner for enlargement, Marta Kos, stated on X that the tragedy “is changing Serbia,” and that the demonstrations reflect a desire for “accountability, free expression and inclusive democracy” – values she said are essential for Serbia’s path toward EU membership.
While largely peaceful, protests in August saw violent clashes and allegations of police brutality. The ongoing demonstrations underscore growing public demand for political reform and accountability in Serbia.
