Fans of Dynamo Dresden and Hertha BSC clashed in and around berlin’s Olympic Stadium on Saturday, resulting in multiple injuries and numerous arrests, police reported. The violence erupted before and during Hertha’s match against Fortuna Düsseldorf, overshadowing the home team’s 1-0 victory.
The confrontations, which involved organized groups of supporters from both clubs, prompted a significant police presence and led to temporary disruptions in access to the stadium. Authorities are investigating the incidents and have initiated proceedings against dozens of individuals for offenses including assault, breach of the peace, and the use of pyrotechnics. This latest outbreak of fan violence underscores the ongoing challenges of managing rivalries within German football and raises concerns about safety at future matches.
According to police statements, the initial disturbances began several hours before kickoff as Dynamo Dresden supporters attempted to reach the stadium. Clashes with Hertha fans escalated near the stadium entrances, requiring intervention from law enforcement. Further scuffles occurred within the stadium itself, despite security measures.
“We are taking these incidents very seriously,” a Berlin police spokesperson stated. “Our priority is to ensure the safety of all spectators and to bring those responsible for the violence to justice.”
The incidents occurred as Hertha BSC aims to continue its recent positive momentum following wins against Fortuna Düsseldorf and SV Elversberg, while Union Berlin seeks to solidify its position in the upper half of the Bundesliga table. A separate police operation is underway in preparation for Union Berlin’s upcoming “double home game,” deemed a high-risk event.
