Prince Andrew to Remain at Royal Lodge Despite Calls for Further Scrutiny
Prince Andrew will not immediately vacate Royal Lodge, his longtime residence, following the king’s decision to strip him of his honorary military roles and public duties. The move comes amid continued fallout from allegations of sexual assault made by virginia Giuffre, which he strenuously denies.
The controversy surrounding Andrew reached a peak in 2022 when he settled a civil case with Giuffre for an undisclosed multi-million dollar sum, despite maintaining he did not remember meeting her. giuffre alleges abuse by Andrew, Jeffrey Epstein, and Ghislaine Maxwell when she was a teenager. Following the King’s decision, Giuffre’s family stated she had “brought down a prince,” with her brother, Sky roberts, calling for a full examination into Andrew’s conduct and stating the removal of his titles was “not enough.” He told Sky News, “He should be investigated, let’s put it that way… he’s still in a very, let’s say, cushy spot.”
Calls for further action have extended beyond Giuffre’s family. UK trade minister Chris Bryant told the BBC that Andrew should cooperate with US law enforcement regarding the crimes of Epstein “just as with any ordinary member of the public.” Gloria Allred, representing victims of Epstein, described Andrew losing his title and Royal Lodge as “long overdue” and “definitely welcome,” adding, ”This is a man who should no longer walk with honour. He should be ashamed of himself.” Allred reiterated her call for Andrew to testify “under oath” to US law enforcement, a request he has so far declined.
The Metropolitan Police is currently investigating reports that Andrew attempted to obtain personal information about Giuffre through his police protection detail.
