Ukrainian Special Forces Mount Counteroffensive in Pokrovsk Amidst Intense Russian Assault
Pokrovsk, Ukraine – Ukrainian military intelligence (HUR) special forces are conducting a counteroffensive operation in the embattled city of Pokrovsk, as Russian forces have made notable inroads, possibly controlling up to 60 percent of the area, according to reports from Ukrainian sources. The operation, reportedly led by Kyrylo Budanov, head of the HUR, aims to create a corridor for Ukrainian soldiers facing potential encirclement.
The situation in Pokrovsk is critical, with Ukrainian soldiers reporting a dire lack of resources and facing overwhelming Russian pressure. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged the intensity of the fighting, stating, ”The Russians are in Pokrovsk,” and adding, “They are being destroyed, gradually destroyed, because we have to keep our soldiers.” Reports indicate up to 1,500 Ukrainian troops could be surrounded if an urgent withdrawal is not executed. Unconfirmed reports circulating on social media suggest a Black Hawk helicopter was observed in the area, potentially supporting the evacuation or special forces operation.
According to Ukrainian news agency Unian, an unnamed officer from the Ukrainian army warned that Russian forces are actively penetrating neighboring towns, Rodynske and Myrnohrad. A drone operator who recently left Pokrovsk claims Ukrainian defenders are effectively surrounded. The counteroffensive is described by The Economist’s Oliver carroll as a “brave counter-offensive” on X (formerly Twitter), though he cautioned that the data remains unverified.
Ukrainian forces have previously withdrawn from strategically compromised cities to minimize casualties, and the current operation may serve a similar purpose – facilitating a controlled retreat while inflicting maximum damage on the advancing Russian forces. The fighting in Pokrovsk represents a key battleground in the ongoing conflict, with the potential to substantially alter the front lines in eastern Ukraine.
