Betting Scandal Puts Turkey‘s World Cup Hopes in Jeopardy

Turkey’s potential return to the FIFA ‍World Cup is under threat following a widespread betting ‌scandal currently engulfing Turkish football. ⁣Investigations‌ are underway that could lead to the ‌national team’s exclusion from the 2026 tournament in‍ the USA,Mexico, and Canada, according to FIFA regulations.

the scandal centers around allegations that hundreds of⁢ referees actively participated in sports betting. Reports from Turkish television station⁣ “habertürk,” citing judicial sources, indicate investigations⁤ are also‌ extending to players and ⁢clubs, with a ⁤total ⁢of 3,700 individuals potentially facing‍ disciplinary proceedings.

FIFA possesses the authority to exclude a national association⁣ if it is deemed to have endangered the integrity of the sport. Beyond potential exclusion, individuals involved – players, referees, and‌ officials ⁤- could face fines and suspensions, and the Turkish ‍Football Association ⁣could be subject to further sanctions.

Currently,⁤ Turkey is in a⁤ strong position to qualify for‍ the World Cup. They sit second in Group E‍ of the European qualifying stage with nine points, trailing group leader Spain by three⁢ points, but holding a six-point advantage over Georgia. The group winner qualifies directly for the tournament. Even‌ if they finish second, Turkey is likely to participate in a playoff tournament involving the twelve group runners-up and the four best-placed⁢ group ⁢winners from ⁣the UEFA nations League who haven’t already qualified, competing for the final four qualifying spots.

However, the outcome of ⁣these‍ qualifying efforts now ‌hangs in⁢ the balance as the investigation unfolds. Turkey last appeared ⁣in a World Cup in‍ 2002, achieving a third-place finish in Japan and South⁣ Korea.
