Pistons Gain Devoted International Fan Following as South Korean Man Travels 6,500 Miles to Support Team
DETROIT, MI – A dedicated basketball fan made an extraordinary journey this week, traveling 6,500 miles from Seoul, South Korea, to Detroit to cheer on the Detroit Pistons. Tom Hur, whose passion for the team ignited in 2010 with the signing of Tracy McGrady, is experiencing the city and its basketball culture firsthand, and his story highlights the growing global reach of the NBA and the power of fan devotion.
Hur’s initial connection to the Pistons came during a period of personal meaning. “Then was Tracy McGrady and yeah, he’s not exactly a Pistons legend but in 2010, he signed a one-year contract with the pistons and I was like so my favorite player is signing with my favorite team at the time, so I was like this is going to be my team. So it all started from there,” Hur explained. This initial spark blossomed into a steadfast fandom, leading him to visit Detroit for the first time in 2023 and now, a two-week immersive experience.
His first visit in 2023 cemented his love for the city. “I love everything. The people, the food, the culture, everything. The buildings, the architecture is really great. There are really nice spots to go,” Hur said. He extended his stay this time, resolute to fully experience Detroit beyond the arena.
Hur attended the Pistons’ season opener on Sunday, calling it an “unforgettable experience.” He’s already met Pistons player Isaiah Stewart and plans to attend Wednesday night’s game. Despite the team’s recent challenges, Hur remains optimistic. “I am a very positive fan, if you would call it, so I think we have a chance to make it to the finals and possibly win it all,” he stated.
Hur’s dedication exemplifies the NBA’s expanding international fanbase and the enduring appeal of the Detroit Pistons, even through periods of rebuilding. His story serves as a testament to the unifying power of sports and the lengths fans will go to support their teams.
