Cruise ship Investigation Launched After Body Found on Remote Lizard Island
Lizard Island, QLD – Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) investigators will examine the circumstances surrounding how the body of a woman was discovered on the shores of Lizard Island following a cruise ship voyage.The incident has prompted an investigation into the cruise operator’s safety protocols and procedures.
The woman was found on Blue Lagoon,Lizard Island,on Tuesday,prompting a response from Queensland Police and AMSA. The body is believed to be that of a passenger from the Coral Expeditions vessel Coral Adventurer, which had departed Cairns on a 12-night voyage.
“We all felt so much for the Lizard Island Resort crew and the crews from [the] ships. You could hear the devastation in their voices [on the radio],” said Liz Ayris, a local resident, describing the atmosphere following the discovery.
Coral Expeditions General Manager Mark Fifield confirmed the company is cooperating fully wiht authorities. “While investigations into the incident are continuing, we are deeply sorry that this has occurred and are offering our full support to the woman’s family,” Fifield stated.
AMSA confirmed it will attend the Coral Adventurer upon its arrival in Darwin as part of its investigation. “AMSA is currently liaising and working with other relevant agencies on this matter,” an AMSA spokesperson said. “AMSA takes the safety of passengers and crew onboard commercial vessels seriously.”
Queensland Police are assisting with the investigation, classifying the death as “sudden and non-suspicious.” A report will be prepared for the coroner.
Lizard Island, a remote tropical island off the coast of Queensland, is a popular destination for high-end tourism and marine research. The island is known for its pristine beaches and the Great Barrier Reef’s diverse marine life. Tourism Tropical North Queensland has extended its sympathies to the woman’s family, stating it is awaiting further details as the investigation unfolds.
“It was very sad in this paradise to have this tragedy occur. it should have been a happy time for that lovely lady,” Ayris added.
