Korean Tennis Player Shin Woo-bin Reflects on Successful 2025 Season, Eyes Military Service
SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA – Following a first-round loss to Marc-Andrea Huessler of Switzerland (257th ranked) at the 2025 Eugene Investment & Securities Seoul Open International Men’s Challenger Tennis Tournament, South Korean player Shin Woo-bin, representing Gyeongsan City Hall, assessed a year marked by notable progress in his singles career. Huessler defeated Shin 4-6, 2-6.
Shin,502nd in the world rankings, has seen marked betterment in 2025 after previously finding more success in doubles competition. He acknowledged his performance this year as “not a bad year,” citing consistent results on the ITF World Tour and selection to the Davis Cup team.
“Until last year, I had some success in doubles, but singles didn’t do well,” Shin stated in a post-match interview. “Representing the national team wasn’t my goal either, but with the fast going well, I think it was a good year in many ways.”
currently,Shin is awaiting the final acceptance announcement in January regarding his application to join the Armed Forces Athletic Corps (Sangmu). He plans to compete in the Korean Championships in Gimcheon and a Challenger Tournament in Japan before undergoing a physical fitness evaluation related to his military service application.
Despite his recent achievements, Shin remains grounded. ”I don’t feel popular,” he said. “I think I still have a lot to learn, and I think I should remain silent and do my best at what I have to do.”
Shin was visibly frustrated by his performance in the match against Huessler, noting, “I was on serve at 4-4 in the first set, but I couldn’t turn the situation around because I couldn’t catch it. Even in the second set, I felt difficult because my opponent was more experienced and had an aggressive style.” he also attributed a shaky start, including an early break, to nerves playing on Seoul Center Court for the first time.
