Threads has introduced “ghost posts,” a new feature allowing users to share thoughts privately, without the public visibility of standard posts. The update aims to foster more candid expression by removing the pressure of public engagement.
Unlike typical Threads posts, likes on ghost posts are visible only to the author. Replies to these posts appear as direct messages, accessible solely to the original poster. This move could also boost usage of Threads’ standalone inbox, which has seen limited adoption since its launch.
Users can create a ghost post by tapping a dedicated ghost icon within the composer interface. These posts are visually distinguished on timelines by a subtly grayed-out, dotted speech bubble.
