Lostprophets Singer Ian Watkins Found Dead in Prison
WAKEFIELD, england – Ian Watkins, the former frontman of Welsh rock band Lostprophets, died at HMP Wakefield on October 10, 2023, after being found unresponsive in his cell. An inquest has outlined the cause of death as positional asphyxia, elaborate by his pre-existing health conditions. He was 47 years old.
Watkins was serving a 29-year sentence for conspiring to commit sexual offences against young girls,a conviction that abruptly ended the career of one of Wales’ most prominent musicians and dismantled the internationally prosperous band he fronted. The inquest’s findings bring a definitive close to a case that shocked the music industry and sparked widespread condemnation in 2013, and raises questions about prison healthcare and monitoring.
Formed in Pontypridd in 1997, Lostprophets achieved meaningful commercial success, selling millions of albums worldwide and reaching number one in the UK with one of their five studio releases. The band also garnered attention in the United States, with two albums breaking into the top-40 charts.
Following Watkins’ conviction, his former bandmates publicly expressed their devastation and disgust. Bassist Stuart Richardson stated in 2014, “Even though I was completely done with him, I hoped it was all a mistake, he was innocent, he had to be. The first time, we knew the band was done. You can’t go back from that.” The remaining members later formed the band No Devotion with American singer Geoff Rickly.
Watkins was found unresponsive by prison staff and pronounced dead at the scene. The inquest heard evidence detailing Watkins’ history of health issues, including diabetes and a previous heart condition.Positional asphyxia occurs when someone’s position restricts their breathing.
