UFC 321 Main Event Carries Immense Stakes for Tom Aspinall, Says Jon Anik
SEATTLE, WA - The UFC 321 main event between new heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall and former title challenger Ciryl Gane is shaping up to be a pivotal moment for both fighters, with Aspinall facing notably high pressure, according to UFC commentator Jon Anik.
Aspinall claimed the undisputed heavyweight title at UFC 320 with a first-round knockout of Sergei Pavlovich, a victory that followed the departure of Jon Jones and the vacancy of the belt. Gane, simultaneously occurring, is seeking a third prospect at undisputed gold, having previously lost title bids against Francis Ngannou by decision and to Jones via submission in March 2023.
The stakes for Gane are significant,as many in the MMA community,including UFC CEO Dana White,believe his December 2023 decision win over Alexander Volkov at UFC 310 was controversial. A loss would likely represent a final chance for “Bon Gamin” to become champion.
However,Anik emphasized the potential impact of a loss for Aspinall,stating,”I’m an MMA fan,and I think in our conversation that comes across: If you don’t think,over last week,at some point,I’ve called my twin brother,whom I talk to eight times a day,and said,’Dude,can you imagine if Tom Aspinall f*cking loses?'”
Despite acknowledging the inherent unpredictability of mixed martial arts,Anik expressed strong confidence in Aspinall’s long-term potential. “I think he’s that good. I’m much more aligned with Michael Bisping than not in terms of how great Tom Aspinall can be,” he said, adding that Aspinall is poised to achieve “financial freedom” irrespective of the outcome at UFC 321 and is highly likely to reclaim the championship should he falter.
Still, Anik underscored the importance of Aspinall securing the win, noting, “Ther’s a lot of pressure to hold serve here, and I think he has a great chance to do just that.”
