Foo Fighters Release New Single ‘Asking For A Friend,’ Reflect on band’s Future
LOS ANGELES, CA – Foo Fighters have released their first single, “Asking For A Friend,” since the passing of drummer Taylor Hawkins in March 2022, accompanied by a music video directed by Mark Seliger. The song, released today, November 10, 2023, marks a notable step forward for the band as they navigate life and music without their longtime collaborator.
The release of “Asking For A Friend” arrives after a period of uncertainty for the Foo Fighters, following Hawkins’ death and subsequent changes within the band’s lineup. Earlier this year, Josh Freese, who stepped in as touring drummer following Hawkins’ passing, announced his departure after the band ”decided to go in a different direction.” The band then brought in Ilan Rubin, previously touring with Nine Inch Nails, essentially swapping drummers. Freese later stated the Foos’ material “wasn’t music that I really resonated with,” and returned to Nine Inch Nails in August for their North American tour.
Dave Grohl, speaking about the new single, shared that the process of creating ”asking For A Friend” reminded the band “why we love and are forever devoted to doing this.” He also acknowledged the contributions of past members, specifically praising “the thunderous wizardry of Josh freese” and affirming hawkins’ enduring presence in their work.
Ilan Rubin debuted with the band to positive reception, stating after his first gig, “After keeping my head down for a couple wild months and throwing myself into the material, that first show was such an astonishing release of energy… Excited for all the volume and sweat that lies ahead.”
“Asking For A Friend” is the first taste of new music from the foo Fighters, signaling their continued commitment to creating music and performing, while honoring the legacy of Taylor Hawkins and embracing a new chapter. The song is available now on all streaming platforms.
