Ukraine War: Civilian Deaths Rise as Aid Workers⁤ Face Increased Risks

Kharkiv, Ukraine – at least six⁢ civilians,⁣ including two children, ⁣have been killed and over 30 injured in recent missile and‍ drone attacks across Ukraine, the UN Human⁣ Rights Monitoring Mission (HRMM) reported today.⁤ The escalating violence is raising alarm over the safety of civilians and the ability of‌ humanitarian organizations ⁣to deliver critical aid.

Monitors visiting the ⁢eastern city of Kharkiv, near the ⁢Russian border, documented critically important⁤ damage to⁤ a kindergarten⁢ struck by ⁢drones. Thankfully, all ⁢50 children present at the time were safely evacuated.

“This ‌incident is a testament to the ongoing attacks using long-range weaponry‌ that targets residential areas, including educational institutions, putting the civilian population in serious ‍danger,” the HRMM stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

The attacks have also crippled vital‌ infrastructure. Ukraine’s Ministry of Energy reported widespread damage, leading to emergency blackouts, disrupted power and water supplies, and delays to national railway services. ⁣

Despite the⁢ dangers, the United Nations and its partners continue to⁤ provide assistance to communities devastated by the conflict. The UN‍ Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) stressed that civilians must never ⁢ be the target of ‌violence.

aid⁣ Reaches Frontline Communities,⁢ But Risks Mount

A recent inter-agency humanitarian convoy successfully delivered 11 metric tonnes of aid to Urozhaine, a community on the ⁣frontlines routinely subjected to shelling⁢ and⁢ drone strikes. The supplies ‌- including food, hygiene kits, blankets, solar lamps,⁢ and medical supplies – will assist approximately 1,000 residents. This delivery marked the 24th humanitarian convoy to the‌ hard-hit Kherson region this year.

Though, ‌the delivery of aid is becoming increasingly perilous. Last week, a UN convoy of four aid trucks was directly attacked by Russian forces – the first such incident of its kind.

“It’s⁤ shocking,” said Andrea de Domenico, the top UN aid coordinator in Ukraine.”after it happened, I said to ‌the team that this⁢ is one of⁣ the risks that we have to deal with.”

Despite the heightened risks, de Domenico emphasized the⁢ unwavering commitment of humanitarian ⁢workers. “It takes ‍a lot ⁣of determination, courage and motivation to keep on doing it,but that’s what it is,to be involved in humanitarian operations in a war zone.”
