Footage Confirmed Authentic following Deadly Uganda Bus Crash
KAMPALA, Uganda – Following a devastating collision that claimed the lives of 46 people and injured numerous others, footage circulating on social media depicting the aftermath of the crash has been verified as authentic by BBC Verify. The incident, involving four vehicles including two passenger buses, occurred along the major roadway connecting Kampala to Gulu.
The verification process, led by BBC Verify senior journalist Peter Mwai, focused on details visible within the nighttime footage. This confirmation is crucial amidst the spread of misinformation following major incidents, ensuring accurate reporting and providing reliable information to those affected and the wider public. The crash underscores the ongoing challenges of road safety in Uganda, were traffic accidents are a frequent occurrence.
Initial analysis revealed key identifiers within the videos, aligning with official police reports.The names of the bus companies involved – Nile star Coaches and Planet Company – were clearly visible. The positioning of the buses after the impact corroborated police accounts of a head-on collision during an overtaking maneuver.
Crucially,investigators were able to confirm the license plate of the Nile Star bus with Ugandan police,validating its accuracy. Further investigation included reverse image searches on both images and frames from the footage, confirming that the content had not been previously published online.
