“Death Eater“: Linda de Mol Defies Calls too Curb Alcohol Depiction in ‘Gooische Vrouwen’
Amsterdam, Netherlands – Linda de Mol is pushing back against growing criticism regarding teh frequent depiction of alcohol consumption in her popular drama series, gooische vrouwen, even as societal views on onscreen drinking evolve. The show’s creators are resisting pressure to reduce alcohol use, anticipating increased scrutiny in 2025.
The series, known for its portrayal of affluent women in Gooise Laren, has faced questions about its normalization of drinking, especially as media commentator Angela de Jong recently suggested any onscreen alcohol use will soon be deemed unacceptable. Though, de Mol and her cast maintain that altering the show to eliminate such portrayals would compromise its authenticity and entertainment value.
“If you are never allowed to do anything in series that is not good for you, then it becomes a bit of a killer,” actress Lies Visschedijk told AD.
The show doesn’t shy away from acknowledging the potential downsides of excessive drinking. actress Susan Visser noted, “We also show the problematic sides of this. In this season, such as, we judge Claire’s drinking behavior, but then you see the girls drinking again. I find that very funny, becuase it is so hypocritical.”
De Mol herself echoed this sentiment, stating, “And that might actually work better than if we all went to zero and everything suddenly had to be politically correct. There is also some swearing. It’s not all within the lines, but if we were to take it all out, it would be a very boring series.”
The debate comes as scrutiny of media portrayals of perhaps harmful behaviors intensifies, prompting a wider conversation about responsible portrayal in entertainment. Gooische Vrouwen continues to navigate this evolving landscape, prioritizing its established character dynamics and narrative style.
