46 Killed in Uganda Bus Collision
At least 46 people have died in a head-on collision between two buses in Uganda, police report. The crash occurred on the Kampala–Gulu highway,a major route connecting the capital city too the north.
Authorities initially reported 63 fatalities before revising the figure down. Investigators beleive both buses were attempting to overtake other vehicles – a lorry and a sports utility vehicle (SUV) - when the collision occurred.
The Kampala-Gulu highway, approximately 330 kilometers (205 miles) long, is known as one of Uganda’s most risky roads due to its high volume of traffic and narrow sections.
Ugandan Police have issued a warning to motorists, urging caution and specifically advising against dangerous overtaking maneuvers. “As investigations continue, we strongly urge all motorists to exercise maximum caution on the roads, especially avoiding dangerous and careless overtaking, which remains one of the leading causes of crashes in the country,” a police statement read.
