“Parking (pre)bidden” Inspires Expanded Public Space Use in Gothenburg
The performance art piece ”Parking (pre)bidden,” staged on Gothenburg parking spaces by the Institute for Art and Chaos in collaboration with city administrations, has garnered over a million views online, sparking conversations about reimagining urban space. The project, featuring choreographed everyday activities in a staged “living room,” aims to encourage public engagement and explore the intersection of art, planning, and community.
The City of Gothenburg views the project as a successful test of fostering citizen-led initiatives and utilizing public surfaces beyond parking. Plans are underway to replicate the performance in diverse locations, possibly expanding to other municipalities and even an international tour, including a presentation at Transportforum 2026. Supported by the city’s Pronto fund, “Parking (pre)bidden” seeks to contribute to a more accessible and humane urban environment.
