Dortmund Manager Kovac Backs Bellingham Amid Playing Time Questions
Dortmund, Germany – October 21, 2025 – Borussia Dortmund manager Niko Kovac has staunchly defended Jude Bellingham following scrutiny of the young midfielder’s role in recent matches, including Saturday’s contest against Bayern Munich.Kovac revealed Bellingham proactively addressed concerns about his positioning after the game, demonstrating a commitment to the team’s tactical structure.
The discussion around Bellingham’s playing time comes as Dortmund has conceded several goals this season, leading to external questioning of tactical decisions. Kovac dismissed the criticism as “merkwürdig” (peculiar) and “nicht korrekt” (incorrect), emphasizing his full confidence in the 18-year-old’s ability to perform as a defensive midfielder. He stated,”He came to me after the game and said,’That is my thing.’ I said, ’No. You stand right there on the correct position. That is where you have to stand as a number six.'”
Kovac further clarified that he selected Bellingham specifically because of his capabilities and trust in the player. The manager believes consistent playing time is crucial for Bellingham’s advancement and confidence. The situation is especially sensitive given a reportedly strained relationship between Bellingham’s father, Mark, and the BVB organization.
Adding support, Bayern Munich star Harry Kane also spoke with Bellingham after the match. Kane encouraged the young player to maintain his current work ethic and continue developing his considerable potential. “I spoke with him after the game and told him to keep doing what he’s been doing and to keep working hard,” Kane said. “He is a great player with a lot of potential. I am sure he would like to play more, but that is part of a learning process at this level. His future is promising, he just needs to continue working hard.”
