Cargo Plane Skids Off Runway,partially Submerges in Sea at Hong Kong Airport
HONG KONG – A Boeing 747 cargo aircraft operated by ACT Airlines and leased to Emirates crashed into the sea after deviating from the runway at Hong Kong International Airport on monday. While the crew is confirmed safe, the incident resulted in two fatalities, authorities confirmed.
the aircraft, flight EK9788, suffered damage upon landing and came to rest partially submerged near the airport breakwater, with its nose and tail sections separated and an emergency slide deployed. The northern runway, measuring 3,800 meters and serving as a key component of the worldS busiest cargo airport, was temporarily closed for safety inspections but is expected to reopen soon.The south and center lanes remain operational.
Hong Kong’s Civil Aviation Department stated the plane “deviated from the north runway after landing and crashed into the sea.” Emirates confirmed the aircraft was a Boeing 747 cargo plane and noted there was no cargo on board.
Airport chief executive Steven Yiu stated that flights were not affected by the incident. Photos circulating online depict the damaged aircraft in AirACT livery. Investigations into the cause of the runway excursion are underway.
