Arriving in new York in 1993, she quickly found herself invited by Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson to perform, an experience that opened her eyes to the possibilities within the profession. “I loved it; it felt natural,” Boykin reflects. “Dance was an easy beginning, middle, and ending to my day.” Her time with Philadanco further fueled her ambition, instilling a drive to ”work harder if I wanted more.” Being part of a consistent artistic ensemble, learning repertoire, and witnessing the creation of new works became a powerful motivator.
Joining the alvin Ailey American Dance Theater sparked a new level of curiosity and self-belief. “WHY not me?” became a driving force, prompting Boykin to explore all avenues of artistic expression. This led her to consider a broader range of creative pursuits: committing fully to her art, traveling and networking, choreographing for universities and companies, writing and self-publishing, directing, and building artistic communities. Ultimately, she felt compelled to “share all I understand about this life I’ve led, and pass it on to the next generation.”
While her body now carries both the “great memories and great pain” of a life in dance, Boykin’s passion remains undiminished. She now channels her experience into programs designed to support young artists, offering mentorship and guidance to those seeking their professional breakthrough.
“I use my experience and stories to pass on the history and broaden the path for those following the drum from studio to stage,” Boykin explains. She is actively building communities founded on “truth, positivity, and encouragement,” offering her own “reasons, struggles, love, and challenges” as a roadmap for aspiring dancers. For Boykin, her dance life is now a resource, freely offered to anyone willing to ask for a little hope along the way.
