Spotify Partners with Major Labels to Navigate AI Music Revolution
NEW YORK – Spotify is teaming up with Universal Music Group,Sony Music Entertainment, and Warner Music Group to address the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence in music, the streaming giant announced thursday. The partnership aims to establish a framework for AI-generated music that ensures fair compensation and credit for artists and rights holders, while also offering tools for creators to utilize AI in their work.
The move comes as AI music generation platforms like Suno and Udio gain popularity, raising concerns about copyright and artist remuneration. These platforms often train their models on existing songs without compensating the original creators. While legal challenges are underway to regulate these practices, no definitive case law has yet emerged. Currently, Spotify - unlike Deezer – does not consistently flag tracks created entirely by AI.
Under the new agreement, Spotify will provide tools allowing artists and labels to upload AI-assisted content within a pre-defined framework. A system for remunerating artists and rights holders will be implemented, alongside proper crediting for their contributions. Artists will also have the option to opt-out of the program.
“The tools AI that we develop will not replace human artistic creativity,” Spotify stated, adding that thay “will offer artists new creative possibilities and additional means of connect with fans.” The company warned that without industry leadership, “innovation thru AI will take place elsewhere, without rights, without consent and without remuneration.”
