Sugar, iconic 90s choice rock band fronted by Bob Mould, has announced its return with a new song – their first in 30 years – and a limited run of concerts in New York and London. The band, known for its blistering energy and emotionally raw songwriting, will perform at Webster Hall in New York City on May 2nd and 3rd, followed by shows at Kentish Town Forum in London on may 23rd and 24th.
The reunion marks a significant moment for fans of the influential band, who disbanded in 1995 after releasing three critically acclaimed albums: Copper Blue, Beaster, and File under: Easy Listening. while the members briefly reconvened around their 20th anniversary in 2011, Mould explained to Rolling Stone, “we all walked away thinking, ‘Eh, not right now.'” The new single, and subsequent decision to play shows, came after regrouping in the studio last year. Mould stated, “But the riff is definitely a Sugar-type riff, and it was fun to get the three of us on the floor together to record for the first time in ages.”
The band’s future activity will be guided by the response to the new music and shows, according to Mould. “I don’t want to get out too far in front of the skis, as they say. People’s reactions will probably guide a lot of the possibilities in front of us, whether it’s more songs or more shows. All three of us are all in for whatever feels right. I just want to see if people are still interested.”
Alongside the reunion declaration, a 4xLP reissue of Sugar’s debut album, Copper Blue – The Singles Collection, is slated for release next month for Record Store Day. A Hüsker Dü live box set, 1985: The Miracle Year, is also due out next month.
