Three people are in custody following an explosion in Italy that killed three police officers, with authorities alleging the blast was intentional. A brother and sister, both in their 60s, were initially detained at the scene, while a 65-year-old man – another family member - was apprehended in the countryside while attempting to evade capture.
The incident, described as an “incredible tragedy” by Verona chief public prosecutor Raffaele Tito, raises questions about escalating violence against law enforcement and the potential for premeditated attacks. The suspects are expected to face charges of premeditated murder, and prosecutors are considering adding a charge of massacre.
The explosion occurred while officers were serving a warrant at a property near the town of Malcesine. Authorities have not yet released details about the nature of the warrant or the circumstances that led to the alleged intentional detonation of gas.
Tito stated the three suspects will be questioned Tuesday. The examination is ongoing to determine the full extent of the planning and motives behind the explosion.
