Afghanistan Seeks Indian Investment in Minerals, Pushes for Wagah Border Opening
New Delhi: Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister amir Khan Muttaqi has formally invited India to invest in the country’s mineral resources, alongside opportunities in agriculture and sports. He also requested the opening of the Wagah border, describing it as the “fastest trade route” between India and Afghanistan, during a press conference in new Delhi on Sunday.
Muttaqi stated he met with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to discuss economy, trade, and other issues. During the meeting, Jaishankar announced the upgrading of India’s mission in Kabul to Embassy level, with diplomats from Kabul expected to arrive in New Delhi.
“We also invited the Indian side to invest, particularly in minerals, agriculture, and sports,” Muttaqi said. He further highlighted discussions regarding the Chabahar port.
The Afghan Foreign Minister also addressed concerns regarding the absence of women journalists at his initial press conference, attributing it to a “technical issue” and a short notice invitation list, clarifying it was not a matter of gender discrimination. He afterward held a second press interaction inviting women journalists to attend.
