kansas City Current Shatters NWSL Single-Season Points Record
Kansas City, MO – The Kansas City Current made National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) history Saturday, securing their 20th victory of the 2024 season and surpassing the previous single-season points record of 18, held jointly by Orlando Pride and the Washington Spirit from 2023. A 2-0 win over NJ/NY Gotham FC cemented the Current’s place as arguably the most dominant team in NWSL history.
This record-breaking season underscores the Current’s extraordinary performance and solidifies their position as the top seed heading into the eight-team playoffs in November. The team clinched the NWSL Shield - awarded to the team with the best regular season record – earlier this season, doing so faster than any team in league history based on percentage of games played, securing the trophy after just 21 of 26 scheduled matches.
Bia Zaneratto opened the scoring with a header in the first half, while NWSL leading scorer Temwa Chawinga added a second goal after coming off the bench, bringing her league-leading tally to 15 goals for the season. Goalkeeper Lorena also reached a milestone, recording her 14th shutout of the season, surpassing the previous record of 13 set by Orlando’s Anna Moorhouse in 2023.
The Current’s success extends beyond points and goals. They also established a new league record with an 870-minute scoreless streak spanning over nine consecutive matches.
“I just want to be the best that we can be and continue to grow as a team,” said head coach Vlatko Andonovski after the team clinched the Shield in September. “And if that means winning a championship, I would be more than happy to do it.” Last year, Orlando Pride achieved a double, winning both the NWSL Shield and the NWSL Championship.
