The U.S. Army has contracted FN Herstal America to design and develop a next-generation 30mm grenade launcher, marking a meaningful step in modernizing its infantry weapon systems. the initial order,announced this week,is valued at $2.3 million and initiates the engineering and prototyping phase for the new launcher.
This development arrives as the Army seeks to enhance its close-range fire support capabilities, especially for countering emerging threats in complex urban environments. FN Herstal, a long-standing supplier to the U.S. military, will leverage its expertise in small arms and grenade launcher technology-including prior work on the MK 19, MK 13 EGLM, and FN 40GL-to deliver a system tailored to the Army’s specifications. The program aims to provide soldiers with a more versatile and accurate weapon for engaging targets at extended ranges while minimizing collateral damage.
FN Herstal highlighted its established relationship with the U.S. Army, referencing current contracts for weapons like the FN M240 and M249 machine guns, as well as specialized platforms for U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM), including the FN MK 46, MK 48, MK 17, and MK 20 SSR.
