Jim Caviezel Steps Down from Mel Gibson’s Christ Sequel

Jim Caviezel Will Not Reprise Role of Jesus ‌in Mel GibsonS ‘Resurrection‘ Films

Jim Caviezel, whose ⁣portrayal of⁤ Jesus in Mel Gibson‘s 2004 blockbuster‍ The Passion of the christ became a defining role of his career, will not star in ⁢Gibson’s⁣ upcoming two-part sequel, The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One and Part Two. the news, first ⁣reported by the New York Post, marks ‌a notable shift for the highly anticipated films, which have been in development for ‌nearly a decade.

The decision impacts a project ‌already steeped in history and expectation. The Passion of the christ grossed over ⁢$600 million worldwide, and its $370 million North American⁢ box office made it the highest-grossing R-rated film domestically until recently.‍ Gibson self-financed the original film, a gamble that proved remarkably prosperous. The forthcoming films, set to debut on Good Friday, March 26, 2027, and Ascension Day, May 6, 2027, respectively, are being ⁣produced by Gibson and Icon⁢ Production partner Bruce Davey.

Caviezel, also⁢ known for his roles in⁣ Person of Interest, Angel Eyes, and ⁢ Sound of Freedom, had indicated openness to returning to the role. During an April interview on the⁢ Big Creek podcast, he acknowledged the lengthy production timeline, ⁤stating, “It takes a while to make‌ these things…Am ‌I scared? Yes, but if I wasn’t, I wouldn’t ⁣want to work with that actor because you’re ⁢not ready.”

The ⁤Passion of the christ garnered significant attention upon its release, with The Hollywood Reporter’s 2004 review noting ‌its “near pornographic violence”‌ and characterizing it ‌as “a ‍medieval Passion Play with much better effects.” The recasting signals‍ a new creative direction for the Resurrection ⁢films as they move toward production.
