Accident researchers advocate compulsory driving licenses for e-scooter drivers

Accident Researchers Call for E-Scooter Driving⁢ Licenses Following Federal Cabinet ‍Decisions

Berlin, Germany – October 10, 2024, 16:35 CET – Following ‍Wednesday’s decisions by ‌teh german federal cabinet to tighten regulations surrounding⁣ e-scooters, accident researchers are intensifying calls for mandatory driving licenses for‍ all e-scooter operators. The renewed ⁣push comes as lawmakers⁢ address safety concerns linked to‌ the rapidly increasing‍ popularity of the micro-mobility vehicles.

The cabinet’s actions-including a mandate ⁤for indicators on all newly registered e-scooters starting in 2027, and increased fines‌ for sidewalk riding⁣ and multiple ‌passengers-represent a first‍ step toward improved safety. However, experts argue that these measures are insufficient without a requirement demonstrating a basic ‌understanding of traffic laws ‌and‍ safe operating procedures.‍ Currently, anyone 14 years ⁢or older ⁣can‌ operate an e-scooter in Germany. The⁤ proposed ⁣licensing⁢ requirement aims to address a ‌perceived skills gap contributing to rising accident rates.

Alongside the licensing debate, the federal cabinet also approved an increase in fines.Penalties for cycling on sidewalks will rise from €15 to €25, and riding ⁢with multiple passengers will⁤ also incur a €25 fine.‍ These changes, though,⁣ still require approval ‌from the Federal Council before becoming law.

The‌ move to regulate e-scooters reflects a broader European trend as cities grapple with integrating ⁤these vehicles into‌ existing transportation infrastructure while mitigating safety risks ‍for riders and pedestrians. Accident statistics released earlier this year showed a notable increase ‌in e-scooter related injuries,‌ prompting‍ renewed scrutiny of existing regulations.
