Neuchâtel Police Arrest Two in Vandalism Inquiry
Neuchâtel, Switzerland – October 10, 2025 – Two individuals, a Swiss and a French national between the ages of 20 and 30, were taken into custody Thursday by neuchâtel police following an investigation into property damage that occurred in the city in late July and early August. The arrests took place at a self-managed collective in Pontareuse, part of the commune of Boudry.
The investigation centers on acts of vandalism targeting several locations in Neuchâtel, including the historic Collegiate Church and the ethnographic Museum. The incidents, which involved graffiti with messages ranging from anti-church sentiments too pro-Intifada and anti-capitalist slogans, prompted a formal inquiry by the Public prosecutor’s Office. While the damage sparked local concern, the acts have not been claimed by any group.
According to a statement released Friday by the Neuchâtel police and the public prosecutor, the two suspects were questioned but declined to provide statements. They have since been released pending the continuation of the investigation, which aims to determine the full extent of their involvement and the precise circumstances surrounding the property damage. The Collegiate Church, a prominent landmark in Neuchâtel, holds notable cultural and historical importance for the region. Damage to such sites often raises concerns about public order and the preservation of heritage.
