NAPLES, Italy - The U.S.Navy is assisting civilian employees stationed at overseas bases by providing a letter to present to landlords explaining potential rent delays due to the ongoing partial government shutdown. The letter, distributed Monday by Navy Region Europe, Africa, Central, aims to proactively address concerns about timely payments.
According to a Defense Department report from June, over 5,100 appropriated fund civilians work at navy bases abroad.the letter details the shutdown’s impact - specifically, that civilian workers will not receive paychecks until a federal appropriations bill is passed.
“Pending a prompt resolution of this unforeseeable circumstance, landlords, and all those who may indirectly be affected, should anticipate potential delays in the payment of the monthly rents as stipulated in the lease agreements signed with U.S. civilian personnel,” the letter states. It assures landlords that employees will fulfill their lease obligations as soon as funding is restored.
The Navy provided the letter, with translations into local languages, to civilian workers at bases in Italy, Spain, Greece, Bahrain, and other locations within the EURAFCENT area of responsibility. It was not directly sent to landlords, according to the Naval Support Activity Naples civilian human resources office.
The partial government shutdown began October 1st following a Congressional impasse over appropriations. As of Thursday, the Senate had not advanced funding bills, and House Speaker Mike Johnson indicated he would not recall the House to vote on a measure to pay service members, CBS News reported.
