Seven Killed in Gaza Amidst Commemoration of October 7 Attacks, UK Leader Condemns Rising Antisemitism
London, UK – Seven Palestinians were killed Tuesday morning in the Gaza Strip following Israeli airstrikes and artillery fire, according to reports from the region. This comes as the world marks two years as the October 7, 2023, attacks by Hamas against Israel, an event British Labour Party leader Keir Starmer described as “the worst attack on the Jewish people since the Holocaust.”
Starmer issued a statement acknowledging the profound impact of the attacks and the subsequent conflict. “We mark the two years of horrible attacks from Hamas against Israel on October 7, 2023.The worst attack on the jewish people as the Holocaust,” he said. “As that terrible day, so manny people have experienced a real nightmare.” He pledged continued efforts to secure the release of British hostages held by Hamas in Gaza and expressed support for the American peace plan.
The anniversary has been shadowed by a marked increase in antisemitism within the United Kingdom.Starmer highlighted this concern, notably in light of a recent attack on a synagogue in Manchester on Yom Kippur, the most holy day of the Jewish calendar. “Jewish communities have also undergone a rise in antisemitism in our streets,” he stated. “This targets our identity and this country will always remain united and standing in front of those who sow evil and hatred against Jewish communities.”
On Sunday, approximately 3,000 people participated in a commemoration in central london, demonstrating their solidarity with Israel and calling for the return of hostages. Participants carried Israeli and British flags and displayed posters featuring images of those held captive.
The October 7, 2023 attacks by Hamas involved a multi-pronged assault on southern Israel, resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people and the abduction of over 240 hostages. Israel’s subsequent military response has led to widespread devastation in Gaza and a significant loss of life, with the latest casualties bringing the total Palestinian death toll to over 36,000 according to Gaza health officials. the conflict continues to fuel regional tensions and international calls for a ceasefire and a lasting resolution.
